The role of magnets in magnetic resonance imaging, such as MRI scans

MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) is a non-invasive medical imaging technique that uses the principles of magnetic resonance to generate high-resolution images of the inside of the human body. Magnets play a vital role in MRI scans. I will now give you a brief introduction to the role of magnets in MRI scans.
First, MRI scans use the interaction of magnetic fields and radio waves to obtain images of the inside of the body. This requires a strong magnetic field to generate a sufficient signal. This is one of the functions of magnets.
Magnets create a stable and strong static magnetic field in MRI equipment. The strength of this static magnetic field is typically between 1.5 and 3 Tesla, thousands of times stronger than Earth's magnetic field. This powerful static magnetic field can make the atomic nuclei (mainly hydrogen nuclei) in the human body be in a specific energy state.

Under the action of the static magnetic field, the hydrogen nuclei in the human body will be oriented so that their spins face the direction of the static magnetic field. When pulses of applied radio waves interact with these oriented hydrogen nuclei, they emit a signal. These signals contain information about tissues in the body.
Next, the magnet also plays a key role in the detection and reception of signals. A coil around the magnet senses the signal from the hydrogen nuclei and converts it into an electrical signal. By detecting changes in these electrical signals, images of the inside of the human body can be reconstructed.
In addition, magnets can provide spatial orientation information. Magnets in MRI equipment are usually ring or U-shaped to form a spatially uniform magnetic field. By measuring the strength and timing of the signal, the source location of the signal can be determined and accurately located on the image.

Overall, magnets play a vital role in MRI scans. It generates a strong static magnetic field, orients hydrogen nuclei in the body, and generates images of the inside of the body by sensing and converting signals. The stability and performance of the magnet is critical to obtaining high-quality MRI images.
